I’m Jessica Madison, aka Jessicat, a cat mom and the CEO here at MyAwesonCat.com. I’d like to take a moment to share my story with you:

At the end of the 80s, I was still a child but I already had well defined and full-headed desires, a mischievous curiosity and an abundant imagination. But the fact that I was my parents’ only child made me sometimes feel a little lonely at home. So I have been dreaming of a cat for a very long time, but I have never had the right to have one. My mother was much the same as your parents. She never liked the idea of animals as pets. It’s a mentality that she grew up with from her younger years. Her mother put it in her head that animals were strictly for outside.

Once I moved out from my mom's house to settle down in my own apartment, I decided to adopt the cat that I desperately wanted. I went to our local shelter to see what cats were available; I immediately fell in love with Pumpkin. She was incredibly shy when I met her but she was so responsive to my petting. I was able to bring her home the day after. I lived by myself at that time, so she’s made my little apartment feel like a home. Cat cuddles are the best.

 After six years with Pumpkin, I lost her. She had a fatal disease, it was no one’s fault, I did everything I could — these are the things I try to tell myself now, when I think about her while I’m trying to fall asleep, or when I’m in the shower, or when I hold her pictures in my hands. I think I expected the grief to fade more than it has, or maybe I just expected not to have to experience that grief in the first place. But it still feels raw.

Pumpkin's death hit me so much that I became depressed. I lost interest in the things that pleased me the most. After grieving for months, I decided to quit my job as a financial consultant and return to school. I earned my Master degree in Animal Behavior, and today I use my knowledge to help not only myself but also other cat parents.

Pumpkin was an awesome cat. Indeed, every cat is awesome in its very unique way. But, you cannot imagine how fragile these little balls of fur are, and how they can get sick and die easily because of our negligence. I created www.MyAwesomeCat.com to honor my deceased beloved Pumpkin, but especially to raise awareness and help cat parents make the right decisions for their felines before it's too late.

Today, I’m a mom of two Persian cats: Fluffy & Luna.

After having my degree, my heart finally became ready to give another cat a home. I was looking on the Petsmart website when I came across a 9-year-old orange tabby named Fluffy who looked exactly like Pumpkin. He first came into the shelter’s care as a baby. I am not sure if he had been adopted and then re-surrendered, but he ended up being transferred to a different campus.

I wanted to find a cat that spoke to me. Some people want a tiny kitten, but that wasn’t necessary for me, when I saw his age next to his picture, my heart just sank and I knew I had to adopt him.

Few days later, I went to the adoption center to meet Fluffy. He was very withdrawn, but not scared. When I expressed my interest in adopting the cat, I was warned that Fluffy had overstimulation. It basically means that the cat has a threshold where it no longer wants to be touched, and it can display some aggressive behaviors like biting or swatting. I feel that had a large impact on him not being adopted.

Fluffy needed someone who could understand him and give him the space when he needs it, and in return, he would be their most loyal companion. I saw something very special in him, other than its resemblance to my deceased Pumpkin. That day, Fluffy left the shelter for good.

Soon after his arrival at his new abode, Fluffy perked up and started claiming his spots in the house. He just likes to be loved on his own terms. He is also very dog-like, and follows me around from the second I get home until the second I leave for work in the morning.

What many other prospective parents probably passed off as a grouchy old cat is actually very sweet and loving. He has been misunderstood for over a decade. Now he’s found someone who gets him, and he couldn’t be happier.

For the sake of getting more cats adopted, I was thinking of giving another cat the chance of a loving home. I shared my thoughts with my husband, and he couldn't agree more. Few days later, it was my birthday and he surprised me with a large box inside of which was Luna.

Luna is a Persian with smoke-patterned hair. When Luna is still the coat pattern may appear solid, but when she is moving or when I pet her, I can see the white undercoat. Luna is very cheerful, one minute she’s rubbing up against me, the next she’s hiding in the closet. She loves to snuggle, but only on her terms. And she seems to want the most attention when I’m running out the door. But that’s what makes her so great.

Fluffy and Luna help me live every day, show me how to love myself better and accept me better. They give me more confidence in me, lessen my fears, and drive away my anxiety. They also help me be more positive.
