Should Your Cat be Neutered?
There is certainly not a shortage of cats in the world and it is necessary for most people to get their cat neutered at some stage.
For female kittens they should be spayed at approximately 16 weeks of age, as this is a time before they are likely to come into season.
Some breeds of cat take a little longer before they come into season, so following the general rule of 16 weeks is usually a safe bet in most instances.
Castration
There are certain breeds that do need to be spayed earlier, but as they are pure breeds such as the Siamese, the breeders will give you the necessary information, and in many cases have it done before you are allowed to take your kitten home.
16 weeks is generally about the right time to get male cats castrated, although they can be left for a longer period of time without any problems.
There are mixed feelings on when male cats should be castrated as some people consider leaving them an additional couple of months will help to reduce the chance of them getting feline urological syndrome which is a blockage that can be painful for the cat.
It is certainly wise to get male cats neutered before they start roaming, fighting and developing their male characteristics, as it can make for an unpleasant pet.
Male and female cats that have been neutered are certainly a lot better pets, with a calmer nature and less likely to roam the neighborhood and end up getting lost or injured.
Cats that have been neutered are less inclined to cause trouble with marking and leaving their scent around your property and that of your neighbors and they don't tend to be so territorial.
It is certainly a high priority with the female cat as having the burden of trying to find a home for a litter of kittens is not pleasant if you can't find anyone suitable to take them.
